FRESCO Renaissance

Although the origins and development of the fresco are unclear, evidence of frescoes dates back to the Minoan civilization of Crete in the second millennium BC. Artists continued to paint frescoes through the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Empires. Though few Greek frescoes have survived, many examples of Roman frescoes are found in Herculaneum and Pompeii. Vast wall frescoes also existed in India and China.

MICHELANGELO revolutionized the pictorial vocabulary of the Renaissance. His modeling of the human form both flouted the conventions of scale and composition, gave the body a sculptural, even ennobled, presence. His most famous work, the ceiling of The Sistine Chapel, depicts the Story of Genesis at The Cathedral of Florence in 1503. Michelangelo`s designs engendered an artistic renaissance in Rome and influenced art theory throughout Europe. The fresco textures and soft, earth tone palette of his paintings work well, even with today`s architectural looks
